A Teacher's Guide to
the National Board Certification Process: The National
Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
In 1987, the National Board was created as a non- governmental,
nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization.
Their mission: *Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished
teachers should
know and be able to do
*Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards
*Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification
in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified
Teachers
The Five Core Propositions
What Accomplished Teachers Should Know and Be Able To Do:
•Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
•Teachers know the subjects they teach and
how to teach those subjects to all students.
•Teachers are responsible for managing and
monitoring student learning.
•Teachers think systematically about their
practice and learn from experience.
•Teachers are members of learning
communities.
*The fundamental philosophical foundation of the National Board The Certification Process
For every certificate area, standards have been developed which represent a professional
consensus on the critical aspects of practice that distinguish exemplary teachers.
*First- time candidates participate in a two part assessment based on the standards
for their certification.
Part I-The portfolio is completed on the teacher’s class. Three entries
are analytical and reflective commentaries which include student work, videotapes,
and other teaching artifacts.
The fourth entry consists of descriptions and documentation of accomplishments
that illustrate their impact on student learning through the teacher’s
work as a learner, a leader or collaborator, and a partner with students'
families and community.
Part II-The half-day assessment center exercises consist of six, 30 minute prompts,
answering questions using the computer. Candidates are required to demonstrate
their knowledge of subject matter content.
***********************************************
*Take One! First-time candidates
participate in only one entry and have the subsequent two years to complete
the entire process.
*Re-take Candidates can retake entries for certification in two years after
the first initial application.
*Renewal Candidates can renew their certification in the eighth year of
the ten year life of their certificate. Research
More Than 75 % of NBPTS Research Studies Found NBCTs Make a Significantly Measurable
Impact
More than 150 studies have examined National Board Certification and the majority
(75%) found NBCTs make a significantly measurable impact on teacher performance
and student learning, engagement and achievement.
Impact of National Board Certification on Teacher Practice & Schools
Research is consistently positive about the impact of National Board
Certification on improvements to teacher practice, professional development
and areas
of school improvement that are critical to raising student achievement.
The Bottom Line: Impact on Student Achievement
Independent studies show students of NBCTs do better on standardized tests than
students of non-NBCTs.

teachers in The Support Network was the best part of the experience.
